LOCAL TAX REFORMS: THE WEST REGION PRIORITIZES DIALOGUE AND PUBLIC AWARENESS

Bafoussam, July 3, 2026 – With a view to dispelling concerns and clarifying responsibilities surrounding the new local tax reform, a briefing session took place on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at the West Governor’s Conference room.
Under the supervision of Governor AWA FONKA Augustine, represented for the occasion by the Inspector General of Regional Services, Patrick SUH NDELE —, this meeting brought together key stakeholders in local financial management: municipal magistrates, heads of local and individual tax centers, municipal and regional treasurers, as well as several regional delegates.

Strengthened Synergy for Local Development

Led by the Head of the West Regional Tax Center, Luc Désiré NKONO, in his capacity as technical expert, the session successfully cleared up regulatory uncertainties. The shared objective remains the building of a solid synergy between the tax administration and municipal executives, which is essential for smooth and concerted local development.
”Far from slowing down the decentralization process, this reform provides local authorities with increased resources thanks to the technical expertise of its devolved network, thereby ensuring optimal transparency for the benefit of the population of the West Region,” the Head of the Regional Tax Center reassured the mayors.

A Clear Upward Trend in Financial Indicators

The drive to secure the budgets of Decentralized Local Authorities (CTDs) shows a reassuring financial trajectory for local managers.
The figures presented during the session indicate a steady and rigorous increase in resource mobilization over the past fiscal years:
  • 2024 Fiscal Year : 404 billion CFA francs collected (Achieved);
  • 2025 Fiscal Year : 465 billion CFA francs collected (Achieved);
  • 2026 Outlook: An ambitious target of 600 billion CFA francs is projected.
This strategic and educational approach instills a new momentum into local governance within the West Region, solidifying the financial foundations required to fund public development projects.
