State funeral for Marcel Niat Njifenji held in Cameroon’s West Region

Cameroon paid tribute to former Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji as his body arrived in the West Region. Authorities, citizens and top officials gathered to honor his legacy ahead of his burial in Bangangté.


A solemn arrival in Tonga

On May 15, 2026, the body of Marcel Niat Njifenji arrived in the West Region.
The funeral convoy was received in Tonga by the regional governor and local authorities.

Large crowds lined the roads.
Residents paid a final tribute to one of their most prominent figures.


High-ranking officials

Top state officials attended the ceremony.
Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute was present.

The Speaker of the National Assembly and Senate President Aboubakary Abdoulaye also attended.
The latter represented the Head of State.


Official ceremonies with full state protocol

The following day, ceremonies continued with full state honors.
The protocol was conducted with solemnity.

The message was delivered by Ndé Senior Divisional Officer Auguste Essomba.


Posthumous national honor

Marcel Niat Njifenji was posthumously awarded the rank of Commander of Agricultural Merit.
The honor was granted on behalf of the President.

It recognizes his contribution to national development.
It also reflects his distinguished public service career.


National tribute to a respected statesman

The funeral service was led by Reverend Alexandre Billa Mbenga.
He heads the Evangelical Church of Cameroon.

Diplomatic representatives and traditional leaders also attended.
The ceremony highlighted national unity in honoring the late statesman.

He will be laid to rest in Bangangté.
