Nigeria Set to Become Africa’s Third‑Largest Economy in 2026 – IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that Nigeria will become Africa’s third‑largest economy in 2026, overtaking Algeria in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). The forecast represents a significant milestone for Africa’s most populous nation.

According to IMF estimates, Nigeria’s GDP is expected to reach approximately $334 billion in 2026. This growth is attributed to rising oil production, improved foreign‑exchange access, and a series of macroeconomic reforms implemented by the federal government.

Key policy changes include the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange‑rate reforms, and fiscal adjustments aimed at stabilizing public finances and restoring investor confidence. While these measures have sparked domestic debate, international financial institutions view them as critical for long‑term stability.

Despite the positive outlook, the IMF cautions that Nigeria continues to face challenges such as high inflation, social pressures, and structural inequalities. Sustainable growth will depend on whether economic gains translate into broader development outcomes for the population.

If the projections hold, Nigeria’s rise will further consolidate its position as a key economic and geopolitical actor in Africa, with increasing influence in regional and global markets
