The Governor of Cameroon’s West Region has officially inaugurated the Fire and Rescue Centre in Dschang. During the ceremony, he announced that rehabilitation works on the Dschang Cliff road are nearing completion.
A landmark day for safety in Dschang
Dschang marked a major milestone on 7 May 2026 with the commissioning of its Fire and Rescue Centre.
The project had been awaited by residents of Menoua Division since 2017.
The inauguration highlights strengthened civil protection capacities in the area.
Inspection visit to Dschang Cliff
Prior to the ceremony, the governor carried out a field visit to the Dschang Cliff.
He was accompanied by senior administrative officials, including the Senior Divisional Officer and the Divisional Officer of Dschang.
The visit focused on monitoring road rehabilitation progress.
Road works exceed 80%
Officials on site reported that rehabilitation works have reached over 80% completion.
The project is currently in its final phase.
Based on these assessments, the governor announced that the road is expected to reopen fully within two weeks, weather permitting.
A tribute to last year’s landslide victims
During the visit, the governor paid tribute to victims of last year’s landslide at the site.
He stressed the importance of emergency response services in preventing similar tragedies.
The presence of firefighters in Dschang is described as vital.
A rescue centre funded through private sponsorship
The newly inaugurated rescue centre is located at the former municipal garage site.
Its rehabilitation was entirely funded by MP Guillaume Mbakam, CEO of Green Oil S.A.R.L.
The total investment is estimated at nearly 20 million CFA francs.
Modern facilities for emergency responders
The project included extensive infrastructure upgrades.
These cover electrical installations, sanitary facilities, dormitories, a manoeuvring area and a secured parking zone for emergency vehicles.
Water supply remains a priority challenge
Despite the centre’s commissioning, water access remains a concern.
Commander Eddy Franck Zemba Kenga, head of the 50th Fire Brigade Group, called for the installation of fire hydrants.
He emphasised their importance for operational efficiency during emergencies.
Governor’s key messages
In his closing remarks, the governor highlighted three core messages.
These included effective decentralisation, successful public-private partnerships and strict discipline within emergency services.
A boost for safety and mobility
The commissioning of the rescue centre, alongside the imminent reopening of the cliff road, represents a major step forward.
It strengthens public safety and supports economic activity across Menoua Division.
